UNDERSTANDING OF FOOD LABELING BY PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH COW’S MILK PROTEIN ALLERGY IN TOCANTINS

Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is one of the most prevalent food allergies in childhood, significantly impacting the health and quality of life of affected children and their families. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge and practices of reading food labels among parents of children with CMPA attended by the Pharmaceutical Assistance Service in Tocantins, Brazil. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted using a structured questionnaire applied to parents or guardians of children up to 23 months and 29 days old, between 2021 and 2022. It was observed that 56.0% of participants reported reading labels “always or almost always,” while 30.6% partially understood the information. The main difficulties included technical terms (55.6%), small font size (28.9%), and lack of emphasis on essential information (26.7%). These results indicate that interpreting food labels remains challenging, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion of allergenic proteins and affecting food safety. The findings underscore the need for regulatory and educational measures, including standardization of label information, greater transparency by the industry, and continuous education of health professionals. These actions help guide parents and caregivers in interpreting nutritional information and promote adequate and healthy feeding for children with special dietary needs.
