Abstract

Regular physical activity is an essential factor in promoting health and quality of life during aging. With increasing life expectancy and a growing elderly population, it becomes crucial to understand how physical exercise contributes to maintaining functional autonomy, preventing chronic diseases, and improving physical and emotional well-being. This study aims to analyze, through a literature review, the importance of physical activity in old age, highlighting its physiological, psychological, and social benefits. The research was conducted through an integrative review of scientific articles published between 2015 and 2024, available in the SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. The descriptors "physical activity," "old age," "healthy aging," and "quality of life" were used. The analysis of the studies demonstrated that aerobic exercises, stretching, muscle strengthening, and leisure activities promote improved mobility, balance, self-esteem, and sociability in older adults. It is concluded that physical activity is indispensable for active and healthy aging.
