Abstract

In recent years, active methodologies have gained prominence in the educational field for enabling greater student protagonism and fostering the development of essential 21st-century skills. Within the context of basic education, these practices present both benefits and challenges, particularly regarding the adaptation of teachers and students to new dynamics of teaching and learning. This study seeks to address the following question: How is it possible to overcome the challenges so that active methodologies in the teaching and learning process in basic education may be effective? The relevance of this theme lies in the need to rethink traditional pedagogical practices and in the urgency of promoting a more critical, participatory, and meaningful education. The general objective was to analyze how active methodologies can contribute to students’ learning in basic education, considering both their potential and limitations. The research was conducted through a bibliographic review in databases such as Google Scholar, the CAPES Journal Portal, SciELO, and the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, as well as specialized works, with a temporal scope between 2015 and 2025. Findings indicated that active methodologies are highly effective in promoting students’ autonomy, collaboration, and engagement. However, they face challenges related to teacher training, school infrastructure, and resistance to pedagogical change. It is concluded that, despite these obstacles, such methodologies are promising in strengthening the quality of basic education.
