Sex education in schools is a crucial tool for educating young people about their health and rights. This study was conducted in Grajaú, Maranhão, to evaluate the effectiveness of sex education activities in promoting knowledge about sexual health and reducing taboos. To this end, a qualitative and quantitative methodology was applied, using a semi-structured questionnaire that addressed student engagement, increased knowledge, demystification of taboos, positive feedback from participants, and strengthening communication between students and educators. The results showed that the activities contributed significantly to increasing student knowledge about sexual health and fostered a more open environment for discussions on topics considered taboo. Most participants reported feeling more comfortable addressing issues related to sexuality and highlighted the importance of lectures and discussion groups. The final considerations indicate that the continued implementation of sex education programs in schools should be a priority in public policy in the state of Maranhão. Coordination between the health and education departments is essential to ensure that these initiatives are effective and sustainable. The experience gained in this project can serve as a model for future initiatives in other locations, contributing to the promotion of youth health and well-being.
