Abstract

Technological advancement and the widespread dissemination of digital devices have significantly transformed population lifestyle habits, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by a substantial increase in screen use. This phenomenon has brought important implications for mental health and child development, especially among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a group particularly vulnerable to the effects of excessive exposure to digital technologies. This article aims to discuss the neuropsychological, behavioral, and psychiatric impacts of excessive screen use in autistic children, as well as to present evidence-based strategies for reducing screen time. This study consists of a narrative literature review, compiling national and international research addressing the negative effects associated with excessive screen exposure, including changes in sleep, attention, social interaction, communication, and neurocognitive development. Additionally, intervention approaches involving parental regulation, behavioral strategies, environmental modifications, multidisciplinary therapeutic support, and, when necessary, pharmacological interventions are discussed. It is concluded that managing screen time in children with ASD requires an integrated, individualized, and multidisciplinary approach aimed at promoting healthy development and overall well-being.
