GESTATIONAL AND CONGENITAL SYPHILIS: LIMITATIONS IN THE COMPLETENESS OF NOTIFICATION RECORDS

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, whose vertical transmission can lead to serious and preventable outcomes at birth. In Brazil, cases of syphilis in pregnant women and congenital syphilis are subject to mandatory reporting in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). However, incompleteness in the completion of these forms compromises epidemiological surveillance. The objective of this study was to identify scientific evidence regarding the incompleteness of syphilis notification forms in pregnant women and congenital syphilis in Brazil. This is an integrative literature review conducted in April and May 2021 in the LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus databases. Twenty-six articles that used data from SINAN and/or complementary sources were included. The highest proportions of missing or unfilled fields were related to maternal education, partner's concomitant treatment, race/ethnicity, evidence of Treponema pallidum, clinical diagnosis in children, and clinical classification in pregnant women. The conclusion is that incomplete records limit effective disease monitoring and reinforce the need for ongoing training of professionals involved in prenatal care, clinical management, and epidemiological surveillance.
