Cancer of breast is a main cause of death in the world, resulting of interaction between environmental factors and lifestyle habits. Carcinogenesis begins when a normal cell is exposed to carcinogenic agents, triggering uncontrolled proliferation, inflammation and genetic instability. The general objective of this research was to propose an evaluation protocol to guide the choice of procedures for breast cancer screening in the State of Piauí, based on a narrative review on the topic. This was a qualitative research approach, of the narrative review type, which consists of the synthesis and critical analysis of the available scientific literature on a given topic, without the rigidity of systematic review protocols, allowing a broad and interpretative view of existing knowledge. The studies analyzed covered three interdependent thematic axes: performance and trade-offs of screening modalities, risk stratification and method selection, and organizational and behavioral aspects that modulate the effectiveness of screening programs, allowing for a comprehensive and well-founded view of the topic.
