The objective of this study is to reflect on the principle of human dignity in the case of socio-environmental accidents in Brazil and how it was reflected in Law 14.755/2023. A literature review was conducted of national and international articles on the topic of human dignity and socio-environmental accidents, as well as national and international normative texts. Environmental disasters, mining accidents, and dam failures in Brazil highlight the complex relationship between environmental damage and human rights, emphasizing the need for new analytical and legal approaches to protect affected populations. The legacy of international environmental agreements and the evolution of environmental legislation underscore the importance of sustainable practices, accountability, and the integration of human rights principles. Brazilian Law No. 14.755/2023 promotes the recognition of human dignity by establishing comprehensive rights for populations affected by dams, addressing material, social, cultural, and psychological impacts, and promoting fair reparations and community participation. It is concluded that this legislation represents significant progress in ensuring that affected populations are treated as subjects of rights, with an active voice in the reconstruction of their lives and the preservation of their identities. This national policy should not only mitigate the damage caused by large-scale projects but also strengthen the understanding of human dignity as a dynamic and multifaceted concept that requires protection in all its dimensions: material, social, cultural, psychological, and environmental.
