THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE IDENTITY OF THE CHARACTER LOURENÇA IN THE WORK CAIS DA SAGRAÇÃO BY JOSUÉ MONTELLO

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the construction of the identity of the character Lourença, from Josué Montello's "Cais da Sagração," a work that fits within the Maranhão literature. This theme was chosen through readings and rereadings of the work in question. Throughout the readings, we noticed this character's submissive behavior throughout the plot toward her husband (Mestre Severino), a boatman. This young woman's attitudes and actions drew the reader's attention to her humiliating behavior, which she herself felt very comfortable performing. This was due to the love she felt for her husband and the gratitude she felt for him for taking her from her father's house, a place where she suffered greatly. The objective of this research is to discover and analyze the factors that shaped this character's identity and thus unravel what led her to become this submissive and solid being, capable of sacrificing her own happiness to see her husband happy. In other words, for her, what mattered was seeing her husband's satisfaction, even if it cost her unhappiness. This research used articles, books, and fundamental theoretical references to enhance the scientific nature of the work. However, this analysis will provide all possible answers to the questions raised regarding the topic chosen for discussion and analysis.
