SELF-PORTRAIT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF (SELF)REFLECTION IN ART CLASSES

Abstract

Frida Kahlo once said, "I am my only muse, the subject I know best." The painter entered art history by expressing aspects of her life and feelings, weaving her autobiography through the visual arts. The reflections of this study are also based on these, and their (self-)formative potential. Thus, we sought to investigate the artistic process in art classes, through self-portraits, with 6th and 7th grade students at a municipal school in Fortaleza, Ceará. The research is qualitative and participatory, with data collection conducted through pedagogical activities that occurred at the end of an artistic process. As a result, through analysis of the proposed activities, it was observed that the students engaged with the artistic practice, as they appreciated the self-portraits of artists presented, learned about their historical contexts, and also had the opportunity to experience artistic creation. Furthermore, students were able to reflect and express their own perceptions. Thus, the research can also contribute to art research and to other art educators, thus providing meaningful practice in the school environment.
