Abstract

Objective: to analyze how navigation to and within health services contributes to strengthening health literacy, reducing barriers to care, and improving the quality of care. Method: A search was conducted in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde and PUBMED using descriptors related to health literacy, navigation, access, and patient-centered care, resulting in the inclusion of five studies. Results: The findings reveal that difficulties in understanding, inadequate communication, and cultural, linguistic, and structural barriers compromise autonomy and continuity of care, especially among vulnerable populations. The literature points out that strategies such as patient navigation, accessible communication, improved signage, team integration, and the development of Organizational Health Literacy contribute to more welcoming, understandable, and equitable environments, favoring adherence, self-care, and better use of services. Conclusion: the provision of clear and culturally sensitive information, associated with structural interventions and the qualification of institutions, is essential to promote effective navigation, strengthen health literacy, and improve the quality and equity of care provided to users.
