BASIC HUMAN NEEDS IN THE ALTERNATIVE PRISON SYSTEM: AN ANALYSIS OF THE PERCEPTIONS OF RECOVERING INDIVIDUALS IN LIGHT OF WANDA HORTA'S THEORY

Introduction: The Brazilian prison system, centered on control and punishment, is immersed in structural problems, overcrowding, and the denial of rights to people deprived of liberty. In contrast, humanized alternative systems have been growing, which recognize the complexity of the human being and promote restorative practices for this population. Objective: To analyze the perception of recovering individuals (recuperandos) in an alternative prison system regarding Basic Human Needs, according to Wanda Horta's Theory. Methods: This is a qualitative research study, conducted at an Association for the Protection and Assistance of the Convicted (APAC), in a municipality in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study included eight recovering individuals in a closed regime, through semi-structured interviews conducted in December 2023. Data were submitted to Bardin's content analysis. All ethical aspects were strictly respected. Results: It was evident that the alternative prison, in the participants' perception, in contrast to their previous experiences in the conventional prison system, is perceived as a space that better meets basic human needs. The recovering individuals report the encouragement of bodily care (psychobiological), the restoration of dignity and identity (psychosocial), and the strengthening of spirituality and life projects (psychospiritual) as central elements of this experience. Conclusion: The findings reinforce the central role of Nursing in promoting health and dignity, and in offering comprehensive and holistic care that meets basic human needs, guaranteed as a universal right.
