THE ROLE OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIONS IN HEALTH IN PREVENTING ILLNESSES AND PROMOTING USER AUTONOMY

Considering the relevance of educational strategies in organizing health promotion and disease prevention practices within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), it is necessary to understand how these actions contribute to expanding the population's knowledge and strengthening users' autonomy in their own health care. This study aims to analyze the role of health education actions in disease prevention and in promoting user autonomy, considering their importance in strengthening self-care, increasing individual participation in the care process, and consolidating health promotion practices within health care services. This is an integrative literature review, conducted in the PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Virtual Health Library (BVS) databases, using descriptors from DeCS and MeSH related to Health Education, Health Promotion, Self-Care, Health Literacy, and Primary Health Care. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 that addressed educational interventions aimed at disease prevention, strengthening self-care, and increasing user participation in the care process were included. It is observed that educational actions developed in community groups, institutional settings, and collective activities contribute to expanding access to information, promoting health literacy, and stimulating self-care practices, strengthening the active participation of individuals in decisions related to care. It is concluded that educational interventions constitute a relevant strategy for improving care practices, promoting user autonomy, and strengthening prevention and health promotion actions.
