Education is the main foundation of social life. It transforms and expands culture, extends citizenship, and builds knowledge for life and the world of work, insofar as it adopts an ethical-political commitment aimed at promoting human emancipation. Education is fundamentally important in the face of human diversity. However, formal education is a complex practice, linked to the philosophical and sociological conception of man and society. The act of teaching is tied to scientific knowledge, social conditions, and political decisions that reflect the interests of society in each historical and social context. As advocates of critical learning, we are challenged to understand the complexity of the historical interrelations between subject, society, education, and training. This text aims to report on a successful experience carried out in the Pedagogy course of the Teaching Program in the city of Nova Olinda, Maranhão, in 2024. The students organized an open Sociology Seminar, presenting the sociocultural reality of the city since its foundation. The event included the participation of the first residents and honored professionals, as well as the community. This activity highlights the importance of developing and implementing strategies that stimulate, motivate, and engage students, enabling them to develop the skills and abilities necessary for their professional and personal development.
