THE CUP BY GRIT: UNDERSTANDING HOW ESSENTIALIST ETHNIC-RACIAL VIEWS ON BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL CONSTITUTE MANIFESTATIONS OF STRUCTURAL RACISM

Historically, the concept of "race," even though not scientifically supported, has become central to common sense in explaining Brazilian soccer's prominence worldwide. Given this, the text problematizes two racial myths in Brazilian society: 1) the prominence of physiological explanations and 2) the subordination of culture to the success of many athletes. It is argued that, due to structural racism, IBGE data based on self-declaration tends toward whitewashing, that is, some Black people see themselves as mixed-race, and many mixed-race people see themselves as white. This criticism is illustrated by statistics compiled from the 927 players who competed in the 2022 Brazilian Championship. They were heteroidentified based on photos in the special edition of Placar magazine about this competition. The percentage of Black, mixed-race, Asian, and Indigenous people was higher, and the percentage of white people lower, than the IBGE's percentages for the same period for Brazilian society. The text advocates that the sports press abandon essentialist racial views and suggests that the racial/color self-perception of Brazilian society is still affected by the so-called “census whitening”.
