Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential micronutrient involved in red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, and neurological function. Its deficiency is associated with hematological, neurological, and cognitive disorders, potentially impairing academic performance and quality of life. University students constitute a vulnerable group to nutritional inadequacies due to irregular eating habits, high consumption of ultra-processed foods, and dietary restrictions. This study aimed to evaluate serum vitamin B12 levels in university students and investigate factors associated with its deficiency. This is a cross-sectional observational study with a quantitative approach, conducted with 285 university students in socioeconomic vulnerability assisted by the Student Assistance Project of the Healthy Student Program (PROAES/UFPA). Data collection included dietary questionnaires, anthropometric assessment, and serum vitamin B12 measurement using a fluoroimmunoassay technique. The results showed that 56% of the students had vitamin B12 deficiency, mainly associated with inadequate consumption of animal-based foods. These findings highlight a high prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency among university students and emphasize the need for nutritional education strategies and clinical monitoring in the academic environment.
