This article aims to analyze the effectiveness of sentence reduction through education and work at the Trindade-GO Prison Unit, investigating how these instruments contribute to the resocialization of incarcerated individuals and regional development. The research is based on a bibliographic and documentary review, with analysis of the Penal Execution Law, the 1988 Federal Constitution, the Resolutions of the National Council of Justice, and applicable state regulations, in addition to an empirical study conducted using institutional data and a structured questionnaire applied to the prison administration. A mixed methodological approach, both qualitative and quantitative, was adopted. The results indicate that the prison unit operates with overcrowding exceeding 65%, which compromises the full implementation of educational and labor policies foreseen by law. It was found that 107 inmates participate in educational activities, while only 25 perform labor activities, revealing a significant imbalance between supply and demand. It was also observed that there was a waiting list of 61 inmates for admission to educational programs, demonstrating a high level of interest in schooling and structural limitations of the unit. It is concluded that, although sentence reduction through study is more accessible and effective than sentence reduction through work, the insufficiency of human, material, and institutional resources limits the realization of the rights guaranteed by law, highlighting the need for integrated public policies aimed at expanding educational and labor opportunities in prison.
