Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide theoretical and practical support for nursing students and professionals seeking to obtain a position in residency programs, offering an updated synthesis of the factors that influence success in the selection process. Nursing residency represents a decisive stage in consolidating the clinical, emotional, and ethical competencies of nurses transitioning into advanced practice. Thus, understanding the elements related to performance during selection and early adaptation is essential for improving pedagogical strategies and training processes. This study aimed to identify, analyze, and synthesize scientific evidence published between 2015 and 2025 regarding predictive factors associated with success in the selection for nursing residency programs. It is an integrative review conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS, BDENF, Google Scholar databases, and the Consensus AI platform, using standardized descriptors from the DeCS/MeSH vocabularies combined with Boolean operators. After screening according to eligibility criteria, 23 studies comprised the final sample. Findings indicate that successful admission results from the interaction of academic factors (performance in health sciences, high overall GPA, and logical reasoning), socioemotional factors (empathy, emotional intelligence, resilience, and intrinsic motivation), and institutional factors (quality of mentorship, organizational support, exam structure, and institutional climate). It is concluded that predicting success depends on a multidimensional model, reinforcing the need for holistic selection processes that integrate cognitive, socioemotional, and contextual competencies. The results help guide applicants, managers, and educators in building more accurate selection processes and more effective training programs within nursing residency.
