EXCESSIVE USE OF RITALIN AMONG ACADEMICS NOT DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD

INTRODUCTION: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is treated primarily with psychostimulants, especially methylphenidate hydrochloride. However, there has been an increase in the consumption of this drug by university students without a clinical diagnosis, particularly in the health sciences field. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the excessive use of methylphenidate among university students not diagnosed with ADHD, identifying motivations, risks, and implications for collective mental health. METHODOLOGY: This is an integrative literature review, conducted in the SciELO, CAPES Journals, and Google Scholar databases, including studies published between 2014 and 2024. Nine articles met the eligibility criteria and were qualitatively analyzed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The studies showed a high prevalence of non-prescribed use of methylphenidate, mainly motivated by the pursuit of better academic performance and reduced fatigue. Adverse physical and psychological effects were reported, in addition to the medicalization of academic suffering. CONCLUSION: The indiscriminate use of Ritalin® constitutes a significant public health problem, demanding regulatory policies, health education, and the promotion of mental health care in the university environment.
