MANDATORY NOTIFICATION IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH: ADVANCES AND CHALLENGES IN IMPLEMENTING ORDINANCE GM/MS NO. 5.201/2024

Compulsory notification is a cornerstone of public health surveillance, essential for monitoring diseases and conditions of collective interest. In August 2024, the Brazilian Ministry of Health updated the National List of Compulsory Notification through Ordinance GM/MS No. 5.201, adding new work-related diseases such as occupational cancer, mental disorders, and dermatoses. This article analyzes the advances and challenges in implementing this regulation based on a documentary review and qualitative content analysis. Normative documents, technical reports, and scientific articles published between 2014 and 2024 were evaluated, focusing on the effectiveness of notifications within the Unified Health System (SUS). The findings show significant progress, but also persistent challenges such as underreporting, fragile information systems, and a lack of professional training. The discussion highlights the importance of coordination between Workers’ Health Reference Centers (Cerest), local surveillance teams, and primary health care services. It concludes that the effectiveness of the new policy depends on investment in infrastructure, continuing education, and integration of services, especially in vulnerable regions.
