HISTORY OF EDUCATION: CHILDHOOD, WRITING AND THE REPRESENTATION OF DAILY LIFE IN THE NEWSPAPER FANAL (1940)

This article aims to analyze texts written by students from the following educational institutions: Costa Alvarenga School Group and Armando Bularmaqui Grouped Schools, in the city of Oeiras, Piauí, published in the school newspaper Fanal (1940). From the perspective of New History, the students' texts present impressions about the school, the city, and daily life. In this sense, they constitute sources for understanding social representations, school practices, and educational values of an era. From this perspective, it is understood that the school newspaper was a support for culture and also for education. The publications of these children are close to memory, history, literature, and education. Thus, it allows us to observe how childhood is inscribed in historical processes. As Certeau (1982) argues, "in history, everything begins with the gesture of gathering." In this sense, the children's narratives "are realistic sources" (Barros, 2019), marked by effects of truth and the attempt to record lived experiences. This serves as a basis for understanding school education in Oeiras, Piauí, in the year 1940.
