Abstract

Brazilian livestock farming, internationally recognized for its productive capacity, still faces challenges related to animal oral health, affecting welfare, weight gain, and herd productivity. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the characteristics of dental wear in ruminants and the main methods used in its analysis. Through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), studies on the topic were analyzed. The results showed a predominance of methodologies based on visual inspection and image analysis. It was also observed that dental wear is under-explored in species of zootechnical interest, such as cattle, goats, and sheep. This gap represents an opportunity to expand research with potential impact on productivity, management, and animal welfare. The study contributes by consolidating existing knowledge, identifying methodological limitations, and pointing out paths for the development of tools applicable to modern and sustainable livestock farming.
