Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects communication, social interaction and behavior; because football is accessible and adaptable, it may strengthen socioemotional skills in these children. This study evaluated the effects of a football program on seven children with ASD, using three instruments: the Autistic Traits Assessment (ATA), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC). After the intervention there was a reduction in emotional and behavioral difficulties, an increase in prosocial behaviors and improved emotional regulation, while autistic traits were heterogeneous, with only two children showing decreased severity. In sum, the program proved effective in promoting socioemotional competencies.
