THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD AS A HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL PRODUCT: INITIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO RESEARCH IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

This study is dedicated to deepening the understanding of the scientific method, viewing it not as a set of neutral rules, but as an eminently historical and social product. This historicity is intrinsically linked to the level of development of humanity's productive forces. To this end, the research conducts a theoretical and critical debate based on a dialectical perspective. The analysis is structured around three major chronological and epistemological axes. The first axis addresses the discovery of rationality in Antiquity and its subsequent ontological and metaphysical imposition, a period in which knowledge of essence (being) was central, but still disconnected from the systematic manipulation of nature. The study then moves on to the flourishing of modern science and the expansion of bourgeois sociability. At this point, the focus shifts from ontology to gnosiology (the theory of knowledge), with method being seen as the key to the domination and technical control of nature, reflecting the needs of production and accumulation of rising capital. The third moment culminates with an analysis of the materialist ontology of nature, as developed in the Marxian model. This model is explored as a dialectical overcoming of the previous phases, rearticulating the method to transformative social practice (praxis) and revealing the structural contradictions present in the development of knowledge. Finally, the study connects this epistemological trajectory with its direct and crucial implications for research in Environmental Education (EE). Thus, some of the main methodological and political challenges to be faced today are articulated, such as overcoming reductionism and the demand for a methodology capable of grasping socio-environmental complexity and its transformative potential.
