MINERAL EDUCATION AND TEXT PRODUCTION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE: UNIVERSITY EXTENSION IN JURUTI (PA)

Abstract

This work aims to present the main results obtained from the execution of the extension project "Mining: understanding the reality that surrounds us," initiated in 2018 in Juruti-PA. The project aimed to develop mini-courses and workshops on topics related to mining and the production and interpretation of texts with 3rd-year high school students from public schools. The workshops lasted 3 hours, and the mini-courses had a workload of 16 hours, through 4 meetings. An event called the 1st Mining Engineering Exhibition was held at the end of one year of the work plan's execution. These actions provided moments of dialogue, exhibition of materials, and reflection, which led young people to understand the mining reality of the municipality and to minimize difficulties in the processes of writing and interpreting texts. A total of 108 students participated in the mining workshops and 84 young people in the mini-courses on text production. The 1st Exhibition had an in-person audience of 114 people. It was possible to address important themes for the future of Juruti, as well as involve students from the Mining Engineering course in the extension activity, raising their awareness of their civic action and the role of the University in contributing to the dissemination of accurate information about mining activity.
