This Graduation Thesis aims to analyze the importance of physical exercises, with an emphasis on muscle strengthening, as an effective strategy for preventing falls in the elderly. Falls, common and serious events in this age group, often result in severe injuries that compromise quality of life and functional capacity, potentially leading to dependence and increased morbidity and mortality. To develop this research, a bibliographic approach was adopted, using available records from books, articles, and theses derived from previous studies. A narrative literature review was conducted through the analysis of printed and digital documents, with a quantitative approach aimed at exploring the causes and relationships of factors associated with falls in the elderly. The selection criteria for the literature included searching for studies on falls, recovery of functional capacity, physiotherapeutic procedures, and risk factors, using keywords in Portuguese and English, including “quedas,” “falls,” “elderly,” “functional capacity,” and “physiotherapy.” The research included articles published from 2014 onwards in the BV Salud and PubMed databases, excluding duplicates and studies unrelated to the topic. The results obtained demonstrate that muscle-strengthening exercises are effective interventions, promoting improvements in strength, balance, and coordination, which are essential factors for maintaining functional autonomy in the elderly. Additionally, the study highlights the crucial role of the physiotherapist in promoting an active lifestyle, contributing to fall prevention and health promotion in this population. In conclusion, the inclusion of regular physical exercise programs not only improves the functional capacity of the elderly but also significantly reduces the risk of falls, promoting healthier aging and preserving quality of life.
