BODY AND RESISTANCE IN THE VEGETARIAN, BY HAN KANG: REFUSAL AS POLITICS AND FEMALE AUTONOMY

This article analyzes the novel The Vegetarian, by South Korean author Han Kang, through the lens of feminist literary criticism. It explores the protagonist’s act of refusal as a silent political resistance to gender normativity. By rejecting meat consumption, sexuality, motherhood, and expected performativity, Yeonghye embodies bodily dissidence within a patriarchal culture. Drawing on theorists such as Butler, Federici, Cavarero, and Foucault, the article discusses how the protagonist subverts the codes that regulate the female body. Literature, in this sense, becomes a symbolic space of resistance. Refusal is not absence, but an alternative form of language. It concludes that Yeonghye turns her body into a site of resistance by withdrawing from social utility and normative roles.
