NUTRITION EDUCATION AS A TOOL FOR PREVENTION IN PUBLIC HEALTH: AN APPROACH FOCUSED ON THE ELDERLY

Abstract

This article aims to analyze food education as a public health prevention tool focused on the elderly population, emphasizing its relevance in promoting autonomy, quality of life, and reducing risks associated with chronic noncommunicable diseases. The research is based on a bibliographic review of scientific studies and institutional documents addressing educational practices targeted at older adults, identifying pedagogical strategies, challenges, and outcomes observed within primary care and community settings. Findings indicate that participatory methodologies such as culinary workshops, group dynamics, and intergenerational activities demonstrate greater potential for adherence and behavioral change when integrated with public policies and supported by continuous follow-up. The study further highlights that adapting educational materials, valuing cultural eating practices, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration are key factors for effective intervention outcomes. The rationale for this research stems from Brazil’s rapid population aging, which demands sustainable and inclusive health promotion strategies capable of preventing illnesses and strengthening autonomy among older adults. It concludes that food education programs embedded in primary care, supported by intersectoral policies, and conducted through a humanized approach, represent essential tools for prevention and comprehensive elderly care within public health systems.
