ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AS A TOOL FOR RAISING AWARENESS OF THE POPULATION TO WATER USE

The waste of drinking water, combined with the increased demand for this natural resource, has become a problem that requires everyone's attention, due to the decreasing availability and access to fresh water on the planet. It should be noted that we use this resource in a variety of activities in our daily lives, but many still do not recognize the importance of conserving this precious common good. Through the vision presented, we seek an effective way to mitigate excessive consumption and a way to raise awareness in society about the limits of water resources. UNESCO argues that sustainable development is the most decisive objective of the "man-nature" relationship, and therefore, every educational process must be "reformulated for sustainable development." Given the extreme importance of its educational impacts, these considerations deserve a more in-depth discussion, which is already present in the National Curricular Parameters of Brazilian education (BRASIL, 1997). This article aims to show that environmental education can be implemented in schools as a discipline to alert the population about the use of natural resources, highlighting the inappropriate use of water and the main causes of the shortage of drinking water in Brazil. Finally, the idea of including environmental education in the bold objective of basic education for the development of responsible societies is considered.
