Abstract

Orofacial harmonization has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative for facial rejuvenation, with polydioxanone (PDO) threads being a widely used technique due to its efficacy and safety. This bibliographic study aimed to analyze the clinical efficacy, mechanisms of action, and safety of using PDO threads in orofacial harmonization, based on studies published between 2018 and 2024. The search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar, including articles in Portuguese and English that addressed aesthetic aspects, biocompatibility, and associated complications. Studies that did not directly address the use of PDO threads in facial aesthetics were excluded. The results indicated that PDO threads provide an immediate lifting effect due to mechanical traction, in addition to progressively stimulating the synthesis of collagen and elastin, with gradual reabsorption between 180 and 240 days. Improvements in skin firmness and elasticity, a high satisfaction rate, and mild and transient complications such as edema and ecchymosis were reported. It is concluded that PDO threads represent a viable and minimally invasive alternative to surgical rejuvenation, emphasizing the importance of professional training and the standardization of protocols in future research.
