Abstract

The Clydesdale is a horse breed that has existed since the 18th century, originating in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and named after the River Clyde. It was developed to assist in the region's agricultural activities and also to meet the needs of commerce, especially in coal mines. One of its most striking characteristics is its beautiful physique: robust, imposing, high-set, with a straight head, strong neck, deep body, and muscular limbs. Despite their size, they are docile and easy to train. Because of their beauty and gentle nature, their reputation has spread throughout Scotland and northern England. Despite their hardiness and good general health, this breed is predisposed to certain clinical conditions, such as chronic progressive lymphedema (CPL), which is quite common in draft horses and is characterized by multifactorial origins associated with genetic, anatomical, and environmental factors. The disease progresses slowly and irreversibly, beginning with edema and potentially leading to fibrosis, ulceration, and dermatitis, which impair the animals' well-being and performance. The disease is irreversible, but there are management measures to improve animal welfare.
