“RELIGIOUS MEDICINE” IN MOZAMBIQUE: ETHICAL REFLECTIONS ON THE IMPACTS OF HEALING PRACTICES OF RELIGIOUS SECTS ON PUBLIC HEALTH

Religion, traditionally understood as a means of connecting with the divine, has taken on a therapeutic role in contexts where conventional medicine is challenged by complex health demands. This article conducts a literature review on religious "magical-therapeutic" processes and their ethical and social impacts on public health. It is evident that religious practices can positively contribute to psychological and behavioral well-being, promoting social cohesion and resilience in individuals and communities. However, in Mozambique, the expansion of neo-Pentecostal sects with esoteric doctrines has interfered with adherence to formal medicine, promoting miraculous solutions that commercialize faith and can result in the abandonment of medical care, loss of material and monetary assets, and harm to public health. The findings suggest that the population's psychological vulnerability is being exploited, highlighting the need for public policies that reconcile respect for religious freedom, therapeutic ethics, and strengthening public health.
