RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ORAL HEALTH IN PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, CAREGIVERS, AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM: A COMPLEX TASK

People with Special Needs are those who, due to their limitations, require differentiated care adapted to their conditions; they are more likely to develop oral problems because they lack the physical/motor/mental capacity to perform efficient oral hygiene, in addition to a lack of information and motivation among patients, caregivers, and those responsible for them. The objective of this work was to promote health through awareness-raising and training of participants. This is a qualitative-quantitative field research study conducted with patients with special needs served by the Home Care Service of Patos de Minas, with data collection via pre- and post-test questionnaires. It was observed that 78% did not use dental floss, 100% of the participants had never received a visit from a dentist, and 65% stated that this would be fundamental to assist in the care of the patients. The greatest obstacle to oral care was opening and keeping the mouth open (22%), followed by difficulty moving around, lack of motivation, patient refusal, and aggressiveness. Overall, the participants' perception was positive. The importance of this professional within the multidisciplinary team is evident, so that this population can receive comprehensive care and experience a significant improvement in their quality of life.
