CLINICAL EVALUATION OF EQUINE NEONATES FROM ICSI FOR EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF NEONATAL PATHOLOGIES

The present study aims to demonstrate the importance of the clinical evaluation of the equine neonate, for the early identification of neonatal pathologies of foals from ICSI. The first hours after births are the most critical, as several pathologies can manifest quickly, and if not observed and treated early, can generate serious complications and even death of the newborn. A thorough physical examination is essential for detection of abnormalities in temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and other vital signs. In addition, evaluation of colostrum intake and laboratory tests are of paramount importance to assess the health of the neonate, as common pathologies in equine neonates can be mentioned hypothermia syndrome, sepsis, pneumonia and enterocolitis. Early identification of these pathologies and immediate treatment are essential for the success of treatment and the recovery of the neonate. An evaluation of the modified Apgar score was used, which is closer to the reality of a breeding farm. In this model, only muscle tone, nasal stimulus and mucosal staining were scored at birth, with scores ranging from 0.1 to 2 for each parameter evaluated. It was observed that a careful clinical evaluation of the equine neonate is essential to ensure the health and survival of the foal and that there was no evidence that the ICSI reproductive technique would interfere with the viability of the neonates analyzed soon after birth.
