Abstract

Theoretical Approach: Oral herpes can prolong hospital stays, increase costs, and impact both quality of life and the healthcare system. The virus remains latent and is reactivated by stress and low immunity. Although treatable, the infection has no cure. Objective: To identify and analyze the most cited articles on oral herpes. Methodology: This study is a bibliometric review with a quantitative, retrospective, and exploratory approach. Results: The search identified 1,762 articles, of which 50 were selected after an independent manual review by two researchers. The most cited study was by Greenspan JS (1985), with 656 citations, while the most recent, by Brandão TB (2021), had 120 citations. The University of Southern California led in publications, and the United States was the country with the most studies. The journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology was the most relevant. The bibliometric review indicates the continuity of research on oral herpes but highlights its concentration in a few countries and universities, reinforcing the need for greater investment in the field. Conclusion: Research is concentrated in major centers, emphasizing the lack of incentive for further investigation. This study is essential to guide new research and advancements in therapeutic and preventive measures.
