INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION FOR THE USE OF PLAIN LANGUAGE IN ONCOLOGY SERVICES: IMPACT ON TREATMENT ADHERENCE AND PATIENT UNDERSTANDING

Health communication is a cornerstone of oncological care, particularly given the complexity of treatments and the vulnerability of patients. The use of plain language has proven to be a key strategy to reduce comprehension barriers, improve treatment adherence, and strengthen patient safety. This study aimed to analyze the contribution of interprofessional education — involving physicians, nurses, and pharmacists — to the incorporation of plain language in oncology services. An integrative literature review was conducted in PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, BVS, and Web of Science databases, including articles published between 2020 and 2025. The findings revealed that multiprofessional integration enhances the effectiveness of communication strategies, promotes greater alignment of clinical practices, and strengthens the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, the use of Plain Language Summaries (PLS) in clinical research was shown to foster knowledge democratization and increase patient participation in their own care. It is concluded that interprofessional education focused on plain language should be established as an essential practice in oncology services, combining technical excellence with accessible communication to ensure more humanized, safe, and equitable care.
