BETWEEN TRASH AND INCOME: LOCAL ECONOMY AND SOCIAL ROLE OF RECYCLING IN IMPERATRIZ – MA

The issue of solid waste is a society-wide problem, affecting the social, economic, and environmental aspects of cities and towns alike. Understanding the dynamics that range from consumption to the treatment of discarded materials is crucial in a highly consumerist society. This study aimed to present the quantity of solid waste recycled by the Imperatriz Recyclable Materials Collectors Association (ASCAMARI) from 2020 to 2022, analyzing its impact on the local economy. To this end, a questionnaire with objective questions was administered to an association employee, supplemented by photos and quantitative data provided by the Imperatriz City Hall. The results highlight ASCAMARI's important role in generating income for collectors and environmental preservation. However, it was observed that society does not always adopt conscious disposal practices, contributing to the inappropriate accumulation of waste. Therefore, it is essential to implement effective selective collection policies and correct disposal of waste in landfills, avoiding the formation of open-air dumps and promoting urban sustainability.
