POST-OPERATIVE NURSING VISITS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT: A SCOPING REVIEW

Introduction: Postoperative pain is a predictable experience, yet widely feared by patients, posing significant challenges for healthcare professionals, particularly within the context of perioperative nursing care. The postoperative nursing visit emerges as a practice with strong potential to ensure the systematic assessment of pain, thereby contributing to the improvement of care quality and safety. Objective: To map the available scientific evidence regarding the postoperative nursing visit in the scope of pain management following surgical procedures. Methodology: A scoping review was conducted, following the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, including studies published between 2015 and 2021 in various databases, as well as grey literature. From an initial pool of 5,414 records, eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Results: The findings highlight the postoperative nursing visit as a relevant intervention for pain monitoring, promoting health gains and greater patient satisfaction. However, weaknesses were also identified, namely the unequal access to postoperative visits, the shortage of human resources, and the educational gaps among nurses. Critical reflection on the data underscores the key role of the specialist nurse in implementing this practice, positioning the postoperative visit as a quality indicator in healthcare delivery. Conclusion: It is concluded that the systematic implementation of the postoperative nursing visit can significantly contribute to improving health outcomes, representing a step forward in evidence-based practice and exerting a positive impact on the quality of care and the well-being of individuals undergoing surgical procedures.
