EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF TUBERCULOSIS IN MARANHÃO BETWEEN 2014-2024

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious and zoonotic disease caused by bacteria of the genus Mycobacterium, with M. tuberculosis being the main agent in humans. Its transmission occurs mainly through the inhalation of aerosols from individuals with the pulmonary form, which is the most common and most relevant to public health. The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological profile of tuberculosis in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, between 2014 and 2024, considering sociodemographic, clinical, and outcome aspects of the reported cases. This is an observational, descriptive, quantitative, and retrospective study that used data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), totaling 30,456 cases. The results showed an increasing trend in diagnoses, especially in 2022, 2023, and 2024. There was a predominance of males (67.38%), higher occurrence in adults aged 20 to 39 years (42.64%), and pulmonary form in 90.36% of cases, with notifications concentrated in São Luís (50.17%). The cure rate was only 63.08%, below the 85% target recommended by the World Health Organization, while treatment abandonment reached 12.64%. In addition, 434 cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB-DR) and 1,324 deaths were recorded. It is concluded that tuberculosis remains a serious public health problem in Maranhão, associated with social vulnerabilities and treatment adherence failures. The findings reinforce the need for more effective strategies for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment adherence, aiming to reduce mortality and contain the spread of resistant strains.
