The growing popularity of resistance training and the pursuit of an aesthetically ideal body have led to an equal increase in interest in adequate nutritional diets, with an emphasis on protein consumption, essential for lean mass gain and muscle hypertrophy. Although high-protein diets are popular, there are concerns about their effects on kidney health, with evidence suggesting they may worsen kidney function in some individuals. To evaluate the tendency toward protein surplus in the diets of exercisers and its association with renal profile. The sample included university students and weightlifters from a local gym, divided into three groups with different protein diets. Anthropometric data were collected, questionnaires administered, and biochemical tests were performed. Statistical analysis was performed with Excel and BioEstat 5.0, using descriptive and inferential statistics, with significance set at 5% (p≤0.05). Of the 37 participants, 100% were classified as hyperprotein-rich in terms of Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). 51% had mildly decreased renal function, 77% of whom were female. One participant (3%) also had moderately decreased renal function. There was a significant difference in GFR between the sexes (p < 0.0001). It can be concluded that there is a tendency toward a protein surplus in the diets of those who exercise, with a mild decrease in renal function in females.
