Abstract

Introduction: In the hospital setting, illness takes on a psychosomatic character and biopsychosocial dimension. Hospitalization, regardless of diagnosis, imposes experiences marked by emotional distress, fear, insecurity, and uncertainty, compromising the patient's mental health and their adaptation to treatment. In this setting, anxiety, depression, and existential distress are frequent, highlighting the importance of psychotherapeutic interventions. Objective: To analyze available evidence in the literature on psychosocial factors associated with anxiety and depression in hospitalized patients and identify interventions employed to address this distress. Methodology: A qualitative integrative review conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and PsycINFO databases, using descriptors combined by Boolean operators. Results: The studies revealed a high prevalence of anxiety and depression in hospitalized patients, aggravated by fear, isolation, and clinical uncertainty. Coping strategies, social support, and spiritual resources proved effective in reducing emotional distress. Conclusion: The importance of psychosocial interventions and the need to expand national research on this topic are highlighted.
