Abstract

This article discusses the importance of critical education in light of the constant presence of digital technologies and the informational diversity that characterizes the contemporary world. It is based on the foundations of the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) concept, proposed by UNESCO, and on Gilster’s contributions regarding digital literacy, advocating for the integration of technical, cognitive, and ethical competencies for conscious engagement in the digital environment. By bridging the traditionally distinct fields of Media Education and critical information evaluation, the proposal aims to develop individuals capable of accessing, interpreting, producing, and analyzing content responsibly and critically, within a participatory framework of informational circulation. The text also highlights the central role of ethics in digital literacy, particularly in the face of challenges posed by misinformation and its impacts on public health and social coexistence. Finally, it emphasizes the need to invest in the ongoing training of educators, recognizing that the improvement of pedagogical practices focused on digital mediation is essential to fostering critical competencies, strengthening democracy, and promoting resilience in the face of sociotechnological transformations.
