Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the epidemiological profile of dengue and its correlation with the COVID-19 pandemic in the state of Goiás and the municipality of Itumbiara. Method: This was a cross-sectional, quantitative, and explanatory epidemiological study that analyzed the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on dengue notifications from March to June, between 2017 and 2023. Data were obtained from the DATASUS database. The variables analyzed included number of cases, sex, age group, race/skin color, education level, clinical form, diagnostic criteria, and case outcome. Results and Discussion: In Goiás and Itumbiara, dengue cases predominantly affected Black individuals, females, and people aged 20 to 39 years. In Goiás, most cases were diagnosed using clinical-epidemiological criteria, with a predominance of cases without warning signs and favorable outcomes. In Itumbiara, data on clinical form, diagnostic criteria, case outcomes, and education level were often missing or inconclusive. There was a decrease in dengue incidence from 2019 to 2020 of 56% in Goiás and 51% in Itumbiara, followed by further reductions in 2021 (64% and 37.8%, respectively). In 2022, a sharp increase was observed—376% in Goiás and 952% in Itumbiara. Conclusion: Decisions made during the COVID-19 pandemic often diverged from dengue prevention guidelines, contributing to the suppression of presumptive and confirmed diagnoses during the peak of the health crisis, also due to probable underreporting. The 2022 surge occurred in a context of relaxed social distancing measures, driven by COVID-19 vaccination efforts, alongside an increase in plastic consumption and improper waste disposal, which likely contributed to the rise in mosquito breeding sites.
