This work is part of the research project “Aesthetic Exchanges,” developed at UEMASUL, which focuses on issues related to teaching and the process of adaptation in literature, cinema, and other arts. Specifically, this work analyzed the book Quarto de despejo: diário de uma favelada (2014) by Carolina Maria de Jesus, as well as the film Carolina (2003) by Jeferson De, seeking to establish productive and transformative dialogues related to the representation and self-representation of black people, and especially black women, in literature and cinema. It also sought to develop and list possible strategies for using the two works analyzed in the classroom. The work was based on authors such as Hutcheon (2013), who discusses adaptation, Ribeiro (2020) and Almeida (2020), who discuss the issue of structural racism, Evaristo (2009), who makes important contributions regarding the presence of black women in Brazilian literature; and a brief study was also developed on the issue of black people in Brazilian cinema, especially black women, based on the book Dogma da feijoada by De (2005), and other theorists.
