Abstract

This paper deals with deindustrialization in the state of Goiás. This process consists of a persistent reduction in the share of industrial employment in total employment. Deindustrialization has positive or negative effects on the socio-economic development process. It is from this perspective that the aim is to analyse whether deindustrialization, i.e. the reduction in the level of manufacturing jobs as opposed to high industrial productivity, a high level of technology and a high level of per capita income. Using the statistical analysis method, we find a state with low industrial productivity, employment with linear growth, investment in research and technological development more towards low technological intensity according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development classification and, finally, a low Human Development Index and occupying 9th place in the ranking of confederated states. The conclusion reached is that the state is in the process of deindustrialization due to the Dutch disease, which focuses on the exploitation of agriculture and livestock because it has abundant natural resources that guarantee comparative advantages in the domestic and foreign markets, in light of the specialization in the production of primary goods.
