To know the perception of postpartum women about their HIV diagnosis and breastfeeding. Qualitative research carried out at a University Hospital from April to May 2019. Ten HIV-positive mothers admitted to the Maternity Hospital participated. Research approved by the Ethics Committee. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed by Content Analysis. Three categories were identified: Characterization of postpartum women, Reaction to the HIV diagnosis and perception of the new reality and Perceptions of postpartum women with HIV about the impossibility of breastfeeding. The construction-deconstruction-reconstruction of meanings and representations about the relevance of breastfeeding for healthy development is necessary, both for women who will not breastfeed, and for health professionals. These will be able to qualify their work routine, to help women to face seropositivity and the impossibility of breastfeeding.
