Abstract

All spoken language is full of cultural elements historically constructed, which directly influence the way of acting and relating to the people who use it. This research aimed to understand the importance of traditional cultural practices in   English teaching language in EJA 4th stage classes at EMEF São João Batista. As far as the concerned methodological procedures, this research adopts a qualitative approach and is initially characterized as bibliographic and documentary that lists the teaching of the English Language in the context of EJA and in Cametá, namely, the Base Nacional Comum Curricular, the Plano Municipal de Educação – Decennial 2015-2024 and the Documento Curricular do Município de Cametá. As for field research, it consisted of a case study developed with two EJA classes based on the application of a semi-structured questionnaire and the execution of an activity based on the short story “The Oval Portrait” by Edgar Allan Poe. From the story worked on and the analysis of the questionnaires, the students' difficulties in learning the English language were perceived. However, regarding traditional cultural practices, the discussions proved to be quite enriching and promising in terms of promoting intercultural teaching that awaken in students respect and understanding of different cultures without imprisoning or devaluation their own culture.
