Urban solid waste management represents one of the major challenges facing contemporary societies, especially in light of increased consumption, growing urbanization, and the environmental impacts generated by inadequate disposal. This article aims to assess the role of recyclable material collectors in the dynamics of the Brazilian circular economy, highlighting their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ergonomic and structural challenges faced in their activity. The research was conducted through a qualitative literature review, based on academic sources and official documents published between 2010 and 2024. The results indicate that collectors are fundamental agents of urban sustainability, working at all stages of the recycling chain, although they still face precarious working conditions, with significant occupational risks and scarce structural support. The study reinforces the importance of integrated public policies and the appreciation of these workers in the transition to a more just and sustainable development model.
