This study investigated self-directed learning, addressing its characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and the importance of motivation in student performance. The research problem focused on the question: how do motivational elements influence student performance in self-directed learning? The general objective was to analyze the motivational factors impacting the effectiveness of this learning model. The methodology adopted was bibliographic research, analyzing academic works discussing self-directed learning, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and the integration of digital technologies in this process. The development of the study highlighted that motivation plays an essential role, being a determining factor for the success of self-directed learning, emphasizing the advantages of autonomy and flexibility offered by this model. However, challenges were also identified, such as the need for self-regulation skills and the lack of continuous support. The final considerations pointed out that motivation is crucial for student engagement and performance and suggested that further studies be conducted to investigate best practices and contexts that favor self-directed learning.
