Abstract

This article aims to investigate the concept of soul in Carl Gustav Jung's thought, trying to establish a possible differentiation for the term psyche, looking for points that distance and bring them closer. To fulfill this objective, a systematic study was carried out in Jung's works, that we see an approximation between the concepts of soul and personality. From this definition, the essay turns on the identification of three central moments in the author's thinking: the beginning of his academic career with the theory of Affective Complexes; the expansion of Jungian theory with the Collective Unconscious idea; and finally, the writings destined to alchemy, mainly in the treatises of Dorneus in an attempt to differentiate soul and spirit. Through the three selected moments, it is possible to perceive that in a first moment linked to Complex Theory, the concept of soul moves away from the psyche and gradually fuses with the idea of the Self; finally, a total indistinction in the late writings of alchemy where we see the concept of Anima mundi.
